Former Senator

posted 3/16/09 @ 5:59 PM PST

As a former Senator of Harbor College, I was present when Nina Malone REQUIRED me to enroll in her class. She made us go out and recruit people to enroll in her political science class, stating very clearly "if we did not get enough people to enroll in my class,Brad Young would cancel the class and we could not have student government meetings". There was never a mention of any LAB.
I was very offended by Ms. Malone's often tyrannical control over our meetings, telling us what when and how to do things. Like Carlos and Patrick, former Presidents of Harbor AS stated "she cuts me off at the knees". I agree with them. It seems that this is not just an isolated incident since other past presidents have all encountered the same problems.
BRAVO for Ms. Richards to stand up to Ms.Malone, it's about time that somebody did since she always threatens them, and me with "Do you know who I know?" and "don;t oyu want to graduate", "Dont you want an A?"

It seems that the District is covering for the college administration callous mistakes and lack of student first focus and shows
that since they are making a lot of changes all of the sudden that Ms. Richards most likely was right, or else why all the sudden changes?

LAHC Student - **READ**

Journalistic Butchery
-By a Student of LAHC

I am an adult and a Student of Los Angeles Harbor College and when I pick up the Harbor Tides I expect to see and read NEWS! I do not want to read one sided gossip stories that seem to have been written by some child straight out of high school. To allow an article like ?ASO President Suspended? to be printed in the Harbor Tides and to allow a statement like ?Malone refused to comment for this story despite numerous attempts to reach her by phone and at her office,? when it is VERY simple to contact Nina, is only evidence of incompetent journalism on behalf of Harbor Tides? new staff member, Jose Luis Gonzalez. To speak to Nina one can simply go to her office and/or one can go to the ASO SENATE MEETINGS and either wait for the meeting to end to speak to her, or one can actually speak in the OPEN FORUM section of the senate meetings and ask questions directly to Nina and the entire ASO Student Senate.

It?s ridiculous for Jose Luis Gonzalez or anyone to say that they could not contact Nina. If Jose Luis Gonzalez (and anyone else) really wanted to speak to Nina and she really didn?t want to speak up, Gonzalez could have put her and the entire student senate on the spot at the ASO Student Senate meetings and maybe THEN would you actually have a valid interesting news story. The blatant one sidedness of this article is seemingly repulsive, and to allow a Gonzalez to blame his lack of journalistic effort on Nina and then to allow him to slander Miss Malone and the ASO Student Senate is ridiculously astounding. Anyone who approved this article for printing should be ashamed of themselves.

It is just so disappointing to see a paper that was once great go more and more down the drain. Throughout editions of the Harbor Tides, one can literally read the paper and find repeated words, obvious bad grammar, and word groups that make absolutely no sense. This March?s first edition is the perfect example of incompetent reporting and lack of professional editing.

Hopefully something is done about re-raising the journalistic bar at LAHC and what is and what is not acceptable for printing in the Harbor Tides. Our journalists need to be prepared and educated to write and give the news in a professional manner, and those in charge of the Journalism department must be held more accountable to the journalists, the faculty, and the students of Los Angeles Harbor College.

I find it odd that they would suspend a grown woman, someone in their own age group a peer perhaps. I feel they perhaps feel threatened because knowledge is power.
I don't honestly feel a young adult would have dealt with the deep issues Ms. Richards brought to the surface. There are politics wherever there is money. That is for certain. It's just not everyone that is willing to take a stand. There is a lot at stake for all, as you can tell by the few posting people are afraid to speak about it. Fear of repercussions. I have had my say, and we will see what happens won't we.I don't know the facts.
Peace.
