A few years ago, people thought that $4.50 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was just outrageous.

Now it seems that we Americans would kill to have that price.

The price of gas affects both the rich and the poor. Among the poor being starving Harbor Seahawks, many of these students who must rely on their vehicles to get them to and from school. While many students live around campus in areas such as San Pedro, Lomita and Harbor City, others have more of a commute.

John Bryant is one of them. For the past year, Bryant has been commuting from Bellflower to Wilmington everyday.

"I want to finish my last semester here at Harbor," Bryant said. "I moved away from San Pedro last year and my gas bill has nearly tripled and I only drive a Saturn"!

Some, like German Delgado, have found ways of beating gas prices.

"I only live a mile from school. I walk, catch a ride with friends or jog for exercise. I only have to fill up once and it lasts me a week and a half."

One problem with finding ways to beat prices at the pump is that people are not willing to share. Everyone wants to use their own car here in car crazy California. Not to mention, every college student has their own busy schedule which may not coincide with others engagements.

According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, only about 30% of college students carpool on a weekly or monthly basis.

Right now gas prices in the Harbor area range from $4.35 to $5.01 a gallon. This means less money for Seahawks to go on trips, out to eat and other leisure activities.

"This is totally insane" Derek Shultz said. My band and I wanted to do a road trip this summer but can't because of the gas. Maybe we can make a quick trip to Arizona."

According to CNBC.com, record gas prices will reduce the demand for fuel this summer which will be a first in over 17 years.

Hybrids and natural gas vehicals are alternatives to gasoline powered cars which are becoming more popular but still too expensive for an average person or college student to aquire.

Eddie Cochran and Jerry Capehart said it best when they sang "There ain't no cure for the Summertime Blues."
