A small brush fire blew across the dry fields near Lake Machado about half a mile away from the Harbor Golf Practice Center, near Parking lot 8 at Los Angeles Harbor College. The fire was burning near Anaheim street, east towards the 110 freeway, not yet harming LAHC or the Harbor Golf Practice Center.

Los Angeles Harbor College geography instructor Melanie Renfrew responded to reports of her recent conviction of harassment and violation of a restraining order obtained by KNBC-TV Channel 4 weatherman Fritz Coleman by posting an email to colleagues that claimed "by slandering me as a criminal" [Coleman] has proven that he is "not a friend of education.

Hundreds of students gathered for the yearly annual Transfer Fair at the Seahawk Center. The fair took place on October 7th, and displayed information from over 30 different four-year colleges. Public and private schools alike attended the event, such schools as: USC, UCLA, CSULB, CSUN; and even the school of acupuncture South Baylo University, among others.

LAHC's second annual depression screening event proves to be beneficial to students

Los Angeles Harbor College held its second depression screening at the Seahawk Center on October 8th . Students who volunteered were asked to fill out a form and then privately met with a life skills councilor. Tents were set up to maintain the confidentiality of the student during the meeting.

President Spink announces retirement

Los Angeles Harbor College President Linda M. Spink announced today (Oct. 15) her intent to retire effective in July. In a long email to staff, Spink said "it is time for the college to have someone new take over the reins of this wonderful institution." she said she decided to tell the chancellor and the Los Angeles Community College District now so that they "will have the opportunity to begin a search and have the new president ready to begin when I leave.

A human error caused as many as 14 part-time Los Angeles Harbor College Speech instructors to go without a paycheck last week. College Officials described the problem as "internal miscommunication." Ron Linden, is an art instructor and gallery adviser at Los Angeles Harbor College. This is his eighth academic year as an instructor and his 30th year teaching all together. Linden grew up in Chicago and made his way to California in 1972. He spent the 1970's in Pasadena back when Old Town was a "slum but artists haven," yet was also a "very powerful art colony.

The State Academic Senate has appointed Los Angeles Harbor College English instructor Pamela Watkins to the State Curriculum Committee. President of Academic Senate June Smith announced. "This is a very prestigious appointment," June Smith said in an email.

The Academic Affairs Committee unanimously endorsed Communications Division Chair Carmen Carrillo's proposal of $3500 to help keep the Harbor Tides a float. With this Wednesday Sept. 30th endorsement the topic will became a line item at the next College Planning Council meeting.

The Sixth annual FYF Fest

On September 5th the 6th annual FYF Fest was held at the Los Angeles State Historical Park in Chinatown. FYF was first started by South Torrance high school graduate Sean Carlson in 2004, and was done entirely from his bedroom. The purpose at this years Fest was to provide a low cost event with big name bands to help raise awareness of the possible closure of up to 100 state parks.

Former LAHC faculty member Chris McCarthy, President of Napa Valley College, has died.

Former Los Angeles Harbor College faculty member Dr. Chris McCarthy, President of Napa valley College, has died. McCarthy was found dead at his Napa Valley apartment Tuesday morning. He was 56 years old. An autopsy was done later Tuesday to determine the actual cause of death, but it appears that he died from natural causes.

An English Tea Party will be held for the executive Secretary, Mary Copeland. She is leaving Los Angeles Harbor College to attend UCLA. The event will be held Thursday,(September 17) at 2pm in the Staff Lounge located in the facilities maintaince and operations building.

CORRECTION: LAHC classes remain open despite refinery fire

Early media reports are misleading

Classes at Los Angeles Harbor College remain open today and Saturday, despite a nearby refinery fire early this morning (Sept. 25). College President Linda M. Spink made the announcement through a spokesperson. An earlier report by hctides.com said LAHC had cancelled classes.
