Los Angeles Harbor College Communications Division Chair Person Carmen Carrillo has been awarded the 2010 Journalism Association of Community College First Amendment Award. "I was so ecstatic, I had no idea there was even such an award," she said. Carrillo, who also teaches English, was caught off-guard by the award.

The Los Angeles Harbor College cheer squad is going a through shortage of member's crisis. If they do not recruit enough members by the end of the semester, they will be cut by the upcoming fall semester. The Latina Leadership Network is constantly looking for ways to help the community by doing volunteer work. Their main focus this moment is to coordinate a blood drive they are trying to host. The purpose for the replenishing the blood sent to Haiti. "We currently have a blood shortage due to all of the blood that has been sent to help the victims of Haiti, "said Sandra Eberhardt, founder of the LLN.
Los Angeles Harbor College opened class enrollment in 1949. After 61 years, our school has been changing for a better educational environment. "We have been under construction since 2001 and the purpose is to turn our school green and modern," said Ann Tomlinson.
On Tuesday March 9th, during the Work Environment Committee meeting there were a lot of very important issues that were talked about including access control for classrooms in the astronomy building, the student union, and soon possibly the rest of the school.
Los Angeles Harbor College is now getting upgraded to the 21st century by having a large television screen installed into the marquee located near L street on the west portion of campus. The one million dollar screen will replace the old light bulb sign. The old sign will be taken down and recycled, but the base is going to be refurbished to blend with the color of the campuses new buildings.
Los Angeles Harbor College will be offering a new program called Virtual Harbor. It is a new innovation created for LAHC students, which allows them to earn their degrees via the internet. With the vast increase of students growing each year, available class space is getting scarce at Harbor.
The Los Angeles Harbor College Bistro is a different dinning experience to have while on campus. The customer gets to sit down and be served by someone in a restaurant setting on nice tableware. The Bistro is a unique dinning experience offered Monday through Thursday in room 109 located in the cafeteria, for $8, that's only $3 more than the cafeteria buffet; seating is from 11 a.
The Northeast Academic building at Los Angeles Harbor College has a rule that doesn't allow food in its hallways or classrooms. For a lot of the NEA's occupants, instructor or student, this rule seems to be put into effect as a way to help keep the building clean.
In 2004, then President, President George W. Bush signed an executive order prohibiting smoking in all interior space owned, rented, or leased by the executive branch of the federal government and in any outdoor areas under executive branch control. "As long as the smoke is not directly in the building it is not a problem with me," said Sky Blue, Business.
Associated Students Organization President Stephen Delgado grew up in San Pedro, California, where he lived for most of his youth. As a student, Delgado has had many struggles with school, which started when he had to endure a life of trouble, beginning with dropping out of school in the 9th grade.
Most of the Los Angeles Harbor College students see the remodeling as an improvement to the school, but some see its history being torn down along with the buildings. Near the business building there is an Aztec Mural that has been there for many years. As the construction moves along, the mural will not be conserved due to its structural damage brought by age.

She will be talking about political issues, including the state's budget crisis and how proposed budget cuts may affect community college education.
June Smith, President of the Academic Senate, has won her fourth award of the month for her dedication to Los Angeles Community College district students, as well as her colleagues. Her latest award was given out Thursday afternoon in the Student Services and Administration building as the "Distinguished Woman of the Year.

This summer of classes is going to be pretty small with a small list of General Education classes being offered. Instructors apparently are making too much money when it comes to deficit of the Los Angeles Community College School District. Not only are courses being cut, but instructors as well. Apparently, colleges are in desperate need for replacements of the veteran instructors who are retiring, but the district wants to pay less, so it's leaning toward hiring part time instructors.
Los Angeles Harbor College is expecting its new gym to open in the very near future. "The gym will be great for times when it is too hot to be doing activities outside," said Sonia Ramirez, undeclared major. Until the old gym is demolished, it will serve as an extension to the new gym for the purpose of having more space for more activities.

The Latina Leadership Network & Life Skills Center are a women's circle which meets every Wednesday 6-7pm or 7-8pm. The meetings are held in the SPS Assessment Center, next to Café 108. The Latina Leadership Network and Women's Circle of Los Angeles Harbor College helps with the success of their members education and personal road blocks while embracing the Latin American History. Sandra Eberhardt, creator of the network got the idea after reading an article about Latinas being put down by stereotypical views of what their roles should be.
The Los Angeles Harbor College nursing program has decided to stop using the paper version of their application; instead, students eager to apply for the program are encouraged to apply online at the schools website. "This change sounds a lot better, although I didn't see the site yet, I'm excited to look," said Melissa Rivera, nursing.

Ted Twine will be attending the LAHC Fine Arts Gallery on Wednesday March 10 at 1:00 p.m. He will be having a talk about his work and answering questions. Twine's paintings will be on exhibition until March 23. The gallery is located in the fine arts building, room 100.
