First-year Chancellor Mark A. Drummond of the Los Angeles Community College District made quick work of most questions and passed on others during a one-hour open forum Thursday (Oct. 18) in the Los Angeles Harbor College Music Recital Hall. His public relations stop was the first appearance on campus for Drummond since he retired from a similar post in the state community college system to take over the largest two-year district in the nation earlier this year.
Debates about the new club on campus heated up the last three ASO meetings. The Spokesman for the Club, Ricardo Alvarado, said that the Creando Un Nuevo Futuro Club is a group of AB540 students who want to do fundraising to pay for their textbooks. The Dean of Associated Students, Nina Malone, explained that Assembly Bill 540 benefits children who were born in other countries and brought here illegally by their families.

That's in reference to our WiFi internet access, by the way. If you have a WiFi ready laptop, phone or PDA that you bring to campus, then you should already know about the access available in the cafeteria.
Brett Weir stepped into the cafeteria to meet some classmates when he discovered one of Los Angeles Harbor College's best kept secrets. The cafeteria is connected to a wireless hub connection that enables laptops to get internet access. Administration has yet to publicize it and few students know about it.
The campus Literacy Center is open for use. During Helen Edward's absence, the school has hired an instructor and student workers who are prepared to help anyone seeking assistance. The writing lab is also available to students who fill out a referral form from the Communications Division office.
Help is now being offered on campus for students who may be contemplating dropping out of school. Those interested can go to the Life Skills Center in Café 110 on Mondays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Harbor College will be holding a Jazz Jam on Friday, October 5,2007 at 8pm. The Jazz Jam is a monthly get-together, usually on the 1st Friday of each month,sponsored by the Harbor Jazz Club and the LAHC Music Department. It will be held in Room 107 of the music building.
New officers were elected this week at the Associated Students Senate meeting. The Vice President of Finance is Senator Stams. Senator Richards, the new Senator Pro Tempore, will act as Vice President in the case of Vice President D. Ramirez leaving or having to take the place of President C.
Just in time for fall spookiness, the ASO has just announced Halloween Rush 2007, an event co-sponsored by the Alpha Gamma Sigma, Creating a New Future, and The Film Club, taking over the Seahawk Center and Quad on October 30th and 31st. The event will offer a creepy combination of films, food, a ghoulish maze, and the Smoggy Bottom Graveyard, both days from 9AM through 2PM.
Alpha Gamma Sigma is looking for voluteers for AIDS Walk L.A., which is being held on Sunday, October 21. The event is being held to help raise donations for those who are affected by AIDS. Millions of people are diagnosed with AIDS each year. The money raised will help benefit APLA (AIDS Project Los Angeles) as well as many other organizations.

For those who don't know, the cashier's office has moved from its previous location in the administration building. Now, the cashier's office has combined with the business office, which is located in the Seahawk Center. According to the Senior Accounting Technician Virginia Zavala, the reason behind the change was due to an inconvenience between the former Cashier's Office and the Business Office.

When school opened, flyers warning students about the dangers of mosquitoes were all over campus. According to Truc Dever, public information officer for Los Angeles County Vector Control, the area in and around Machado Lake has seen an increase in positive tests for West Nile Virus in birds and mosquitos.
"If you don't want to get the flu, get a flu shot." It's as simple as that, according to Harbor College nurse Carole Stevenson. Beginning October 15th, Harbor College will be giving Flu shots in the nurses office located in the café building on the eastern side of campus.
President Linda M. Spink addressed the Associated Students on Oct. 2nd. She welcomed the new senators and told the assembly that she wants student representatives on all her committees. Dean Nina Malone went over all the available committees later in the meeting.
